AKC insurance plans: Can You Trust It?

The AKC is a major player in the pet care business. They also handle the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world. But the real question is, how does the AKC pet insurance stack up?
The American Kennel Club offers six different plans: a 60 day trial, Accident Plus, Essential, Essential Plus, Wellness, and Wellness Plus. At first glance, all the insurance plans seem to cover the same things. While this is partially true, the plans vary greatly in the amount they will cover both for the policy term and per incident. This ranges from a high of $13,000 with the Wellness plan to a low of $1500 with the 60 day trial. Given the quickly rising costs of vet care, even the basic AKC health insurance could be a blessing for your dog.
Just picture sitting in the after hours veterinary clinic being faced with balancing your pet’s well being against the money in your wallet. Not a great thought, is it? Now, picture the same situation if you had a healthcare plan for your dog that would cover $2000-5000 of whatever the vet said; the surgery, the CT scans, and the MRI. Think if it covered all the necessary prescriptions too. Then, imagine it covering your dogs annual exam, it’s booster shots, and even your flea/tick and heartworm meds. Would you rest easier then? This is the feeling you could be with AKC insurance.
